Day 7 - Ancient Sukhothai

Ancient Sukhothai dates back more than seven centuries to the first Thai Kingdom. Its name means "The Dawn of Happiness". To stroll through these haunting ruins in the first light of day is a never to be forgotten experience.

As the sun slowly rises, we will see the great ancient monuments reflecting in the old water reservoirs -- all filled with aquatic lilies in brilliant pink bloom.

It takes a full day to view all the wonders of this vast archeological site, so we will take our time-- on foot, by bicycle, and by vehicle - stopping for lunch and refreshment breaks at our leisure and with no fixed schedule.

Sukhothai has been designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, like the pyramids of Egypt, and Anchor Wat in Cambodia. There are excellent museums here portraying the richness of the history which we will have time to see before catching the magic light of sunset over the ruins.

Sukhothai has been called the Camelot of Southeast Asia as it knew more than two centuries of peace and prosperity. The lovely Thai Loi Kratong ceremony originated here, and we will re-enact this 700 year old sacred tradition by placing our own kratongs in the waters of the placid ponds at sunset.

The ceremony at Sukhothai Historical Site will set the tone for our last night together -- a fabulous dinner of Royal Thai cuisine, classical Thai dancing, and a dramatic fire show.
