Trip Overview

Day 1

Departing Bangkok at 8:15 am we board an hour long flight to Chaing Mai, then transfer a short 30 minutes to the remote mountain town of Mae Hong Son - the land of many mists.

It's still only 11:00 am when we check into mountain resort/hotel beside the Pai River. By noon we're off for a full afternoon of adventure. We visit the famous Fish Cave where giant carp seem somehow lured to a holy shrine. Traveling by open air songtaw we pass gorgeous rice terraces as we head up into the mountains.

Following a picnic lunch, and possible refreshing dip at the lovely Pha Suea waterfall, we continue higher into the mountains marvelling at some of the most beautiful scenery in the district.

We pass several Shan and Mae hill tribe villages on route to the Thai-Burmese border town of Kokmintung. This small settlement of Chinese farmers fled here with their horses and families 50 years ago during the Cultural Revolution. We will ride horseback through their highland tea plantations and stop to have tea and visit with one of the families. Returning to Mae Hong Son we watch the sunset from a hilltop Shan-style temple overlooking the city, then enjoy a delicious Shan-style dinner. (Overnight: Golden Pai Resort)
