Trip Overview

Day 3

It's another no rush morning with opportunities to make merit with the monks, have a leisurely breakfast, swim or visit the morning market in Mae Hong Son before we check out of the resort and head east towards Pai.

On route we will stop often to take in the great panorama during this incredibly scenic 4 hour drive. We will visit a village of the so-called "Black" Lahu. Originally from Tibet, they still live a basic life according to their traditions and are regarded as the most outgoing and friendly of the Hill Tribe peoples.

From here we drive to a Lisu village to meet a hill tribe that is noted for their colourful dress; a people that originally came from China.

Our final destination before arriving in Pai is Tham Lod - one of the biggest caves in South East Asia.

We will tour the cave with torches to view the wonderful array of stalagmite, stalactites and flow formations. Buried deep within the chambers of the cave are tombs and ancient pottery from the past.

We overnight at a peaceful lodge in the village of Pai - a delightful community with an eclectic mix of simple farmers, Bohemian-style Thai artisan (refugees from Bangkok), and international backpackers. There's French cafes, jazz clubs and international fare here, where you'd least expect it. (Overnight: Muong Pai Resort).
