Day 5

There's no long drive today, just a leisurely tour of Chiang Mai's feature attractions. Doi Suthep, with it's lofty temple overlooking the city from 3,600 feet above sea level, is the feature attraction. Wat Phra Thad Doi Suthep was established in 1383 by the Lanna King KuNa. It takes 290 steps to climb the Naga (Dragon Head Serpent) staircase, but the glittering temples and stunning vistas make it worth every bit the effort.

From Doi Suthep we proceed to a very scenic, if somewhat commercial, Meo Hill Tribe village to view their traditional homes, handicrafts and elegant costumes.

Following lunch in Chiang Mai, we set off to visit some of the city's oldest temples. Around Chaing Mai's ancient walls and moat are beautiful 12th century temples. We will view the best of these before setting off at 5:30 pm for a traditional Khantoke dinner.

Khantoke is the ancient Lanna tradition of sitting on the floor around a small wicker table where everyone shares a succession of tasty dishes accompanied by sticky rice.

We will enjoy an endless procession of small bowl dishes while watching colourful Northern Thai folk dances and Hill Tribe dancers. The Night Bazaar is not far away for any late night revelers or last minute shoppers. (Overnight: Holiday Garden Hotel and Resort).
