Trip Overview

"Thailand's Northern Treasures" offers the perfect cultural compliment to our legendary "Reefs to Rainforests" natural history tour of south Thailand.

We explore the north western extremity of the kingdom where the foothills of the Himalayas, forested waterways and rice-terraced valleys combine to create the most idyllic landscape in the country. Here too is the kingdom's greatest diversity of cultures - Hilltribe peoples from Burma, China, Tibet and Laos - all living according to their time-honoured traditions, and all living peacefully with one another. We will meet Shan, Meo, Longneck, Lahu, Lisu and Karen peoples in the intimacy of their villages and homes.

In Mae Hong Son, we will ride horse back through highland tea plantations, planted and tended by Chinese refugees from Yunnan Province, boat down the Pai River, elephant trek, across rivers and through northern forests, and explore pre-historic caves.

Near Chiang Mai we will hike through a mountain cloud forest at Doi Inthanon - Thailand's highest peak, and marvel at the ruins of this ancient northern kingdom. Chiang Mai and Lampang are ancient centres of Lanna culture where we will visit 900 year old temples, dine in traditional style and enjoy shopping for traditional crafts of the highest quality.

At the ancient twin cities of Si Satchanalai and Sukhothai we will bicycle at dawn and sunset to the very birthplace of Siamese culture and discover for ourselves why this city was known as the "Dawn of Happiness."

Thailand's Northern Treasures offers a wealth of experiences at a pace that will allow all who take part to completely relax and find that quiet place within the real treasure of the region.
