What to Bring
Day 1: Alpine Flora and Fauna, Wet'suwet'en Culture, Ancient Salmon Ffishing Method
  • Pick up in Smithers following a spectacular flight from Vancouver over the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, or arrive by train from Edmonton or Calgary

  • Within minutes of arrival we will be driving up Hudson Bay Mountain for a welcome picnic lunch, to study fields of alpine flowers and to watch marmots rushing about on their short summer feeding forays

  • Descending the mountain, it’s a short drive to Moricetown Falls where the entire Bulkley River plunges through a narrow gap. In the roaring falls, Wet’suwet’en native fishermen gaff salmon using techniques that date back to the last ice age

  • An hour drive later, we arrive at the beautiful Soaring Sprits Rediscovery Camp set in a stunning location on the banks of the Skeena River and in the shadow of the glacier clad Seven Sisters Mountains that rise to nearly 3,000 meters. Here’ we’ll enjoy group bonding games, a traditional welcome feast and our first evening around the Council Fire

Overnight: Soaring Spirits Rediscovery Camp

Day 2: Interior Forest Ecology, Mountain Geology, Salmon Rivers and Stream Macro Invertebrates
  • Everyone enjoys light stretches and a group Circle Greeting before breakfast

  • Following a few easy camp chores, we set off on a hike to Boulder Creek to study stream macro invertebrates and to try our hand at landing a salmon migrating up the Skeena River

  • Following a picnic lunch, we have an afternoon of forest appreciation exercises that are as fun as they are educational

  • Returning to our base camp at Soaring Spirits, there will be time for Rediscovery games, group sports and showers before dinner

  • A great meal, served family style, will be followed by clean up and Spirit Spots at sunset time. This is the most reflective time of the day and a great opportunity for students to quiet the mind and take in their surroundings, or catch up on journals

  • Council Fire, with it’s stories, songs and camaraderie, is the perfect way to end a great day
