What to Bring
Day 5: Lake Ecology, Lava Flows, Nisga’a Native Culture
  • We have one more opportunity to catch the grizzly bears at their morning fishing holes before we grub up ourselves and drive back into British Columbia to continue our odyssey

  • Driving back through the spectacular Coast Range, we arrive at beautiful Stewart Lake for a picnic lunch, a relaxing swim and lessons in lake ecology, before continuing on our way to the Nisga’a native village of Gitwansilk.
  • We will enjoy a traditional Nisga’a dinner in this unique village with it’s fascinating fish wheel, suspension bridge over the river, and surrounding lava fields
  • Nisga’a Lava Beds Memorial Park is the site of the most recent volcanic eruption in Canada; a catastrophic event in the 1800’s that completely buried several native villages. Here we will camp for the night in one of the most hauntingly unusual landscapes in North America

Overnight: Nisga Lava Beds Memorial Park camp site

Day 6: Coastal Rainforest, Bog Ecology, History of Salmon Canneries Along N.W. Coast
  • Early risers can watch the sun rise over a beautiful lake formed by the volcanic eruption more than a century ago, before everyone joins in a delicious breakfast to start the new day

  • It’s just an hour’s drive before we reach the lower Skeena River and a lovely coastal rainforest that is our first study stop of the day. Here huge Sitka spruce, Western Hemlocks and Red cedars tower above us in a cathedral-like setting

  • Our next study focus takes us to a muskeg where we learn about insectivorous sundew plants, sphagnum moss and other denizens of a bog community

  • North Pacific Cannery is our destination for the day; it is the oldest cannery still standing on the entire British Columbia and Southeast Alaska coasts. Now designated a National Historic Site, this is a fascinating place to explore the life a long gone era

  • We will have opportunities to see the cannery line in operation, enjoy theater portraying life of the era, pick salmon berries, fish from the pier, enjoy a superb seafood dinner and overnight in a historic bunk house

Overnight: North Pacific Cannery historic workers houses
