What to Bring
Day 7: Marine Biology, Tsimshian Culture
  • It’s a very short drive from the cannery to the coast and the City of Prince Rupert where we embark on our Pacific Ocean adventures

  • Today is a day for marine biology lessons as we explore the coast and many islands by kayak, and view ancient pictographs carved along the shoreline by Tsimshian natives thousands of years ago

  • We will visit the excellent Museum of Northern British Columbia to gain more insights into the four First Nation peoples we have interacted with on our journey: the Wet’suwet’en, Gitksan, Nisga’a and Tsimshian. And we will enjoy a delicious seafood lunch at historic Cow Bay

  • By late afternoon, we set off on the grandest adventure of all, cruising out into Chatham Strait aboard a charter boat to view Humpback whales, Gray whales and Orcas at sunset. Of course there’s no guarantee with wildlife sightings, but this is one of the best places on the coast to catch a glimpse of these leviathans

Overnight: Cow Bay hostel or hotel

Day 8: History of River Boat Travel, Kitselas Culture
  • After a big breakfast in Prince Rupert, we bid farewell to the Pacific and return inland by road along the historic and scenic Skeena River

  • A few hours later we arrive at Kitselas Canyon National Historic Site, a place where native peoples occupied a strategic canyon continuously since the retreat of the last ice age
  • Here we will enjoy a picnic lunch, explore the ancient pictographs engraved in the river rock, and learn first hand from the Kitselas people many aspects of their culture, from ancient stories, to traditional foods and medicines, to cedar carving

  • From Kitselas Canyon, it’s just an hour’s drive back to the Soaring Spirits Rediscovery Camp where we will enjoy a wonderful farewell feast and closing ceremony night. After all our adventures in Alaska and the coast, it will feel like coming home

Overnight: Soaring Spirits Rediscovery Camp
