Day 1 Study Focus: Karst & Cave Geology / Nocturnal Animals / Constellations

 

  • Meet at airport (or Suratthani train station) and transfer by bus/mini vans to Cheow Lan Reservoir, Khao Sok National Park for a group orientation





  • Board boats and cross the lake to a trailhead that leads through the tropical rainforest to a hidden lake. Here we cross on a motorized bamboo raft to Coral Cave

 

  • Coral Cave contains classic cave formations and provides excellent, hands-on opportunities to study cave geology








  • Returning to the main lake, we stop for a hearty lunch at a nearby floating raft house, then cross the lake to our home for two nights - Kraisorn Raft House in the very heart of the Khao Sok wilderness




  • There will be time before dinner to swim in the lake, kayak along shore, or catch up on your journal from the comfort of a hammock




  • Following dinner we set off on a Night Safari by boat. Wildlife sightings may include: mouse deer, barking deer, civets, slow loris, wild pigs, Malayan tapir, owls, nightjars, frogs, and even pythons swimming on the surface of the lake

  • Even on nights where wildlife are not particularly active, we will enjoy wonderful night orchestrations of frogs, katydids and crickets, as well as have great opportunities to study the constellations in the night sky (weather permitting).
